Game Chef 2008 – Critiques

Well it’s about a week into Game Chef critiques. Prehistoric Ties has gotten some great feedback that can be found here. I think the biggest take home so far is the game really needs strong advice and examples.

A Revelation

Not a big one mind you, but a revelation nonetheless. They are bound to occur as I get more Actual Play under my belt. This one occurred in the online Dogs game that I’m playing with Mo. One of the most interesting things in Dogs resolution is that you can give at any time and of course you can always escalate a conflict or not depending on how badly you want to win. Now here’s the thing. I had read that this means that often players won’t escalate a conflict¬†because they are unwilling to have their characters escalate the conflict in that matter. For example they might be unwilling to have their character pull a gun to convince someone they are right.

Knowing that something works for other people is one thing, but experiencing it for yourself is something else entirely. My character, Brother Jacob, is a young inexperienced but firmly religious new Dog. In his initiation conflict he converted a man to the faith. He gets into a conflict with a young girl because he’s certain that she’s hiding something from him. We started out talking, and it didn’t take long before I was losing the conflict. I was a little bummed out, because I really wanted to win the conflict. Mo says “Well you could escalate to physical…” and I knew this intellectually. All I could think about was Brother Jacob reaching out to touch her, perhaps brush her hair from her eyes, and I knew it wasn’t right. I knew I didn’t want him to push it that far, and so I gave.

It’s not that I didn’t think I was capable of making these kinds of decisions, but it was very enlightening to experience it in the moment.
